Mary Beth Mikrut lives her belief in mission driven philanthropy. Her passions are around health care, affordable housing and adult day services for low-income seniors and cancer research, as she is a nine year breast cancer survivor. Her professional life has been centered at the Presbyterian Homes in Evanston IL and she is now the Senior Director of Development for the Geneva Foundation of Presbyterian Homes.

As we enter the last few days of 2009, my staff and I are working diligently to solicit last minute contributions and sending year-end gift receipts. This week has been filled with reminder phone calls, personal visits and hopeful expectations.

Little things make a difference in our lives. A quick phone call, a short handwritten note, a brief email all have an affect on those who receive these “little” presents. Little gifts can also make a difference, even more than we realize. A new book has been published to encourage everyone to keep on giving at whatever level they can. Give a Little: How Your Small Donations Can Transform Our World is written by Wendy Smith. She points out that most of the donations are made by Americans who earn less than $100,000 a year.
