I got an unexpected gift this holiday season that was truly “from” my parents. One of their long time friends called me. We hadn’t spoken in quite a few years and she had lost touch with my parents. She’d found me while thumbing through a recent Ebony magazine and saw my picture and column on identity theft. Her email was forwarded to me, I called, and we spoke for a moment and arranged a phone chat.
She remembers stopping by to visit at my parents. She’d just come from a luncheon. They were getting ready to eat the two hamburgers they’d brought home after running errands. As the three of them sat at the table, Dad cut one hamburger in half – and gave one piece to Mom. “Why are you cutting one hamburger in half when you have two?” the friend asked. To which she says my Mom smiled and answered: “Because we share everything.” I’m Valerie Coleman Morris, With the Family in Mind.
